Let's face it, an initial diagnosis of dyslexia, or a parent's nagging intuition that their bright child just isn't "cracking the code" of reading, can be frightening and intimidating.
As the parent to a middle schooler with significant dyslexia, for me back-to-school conjures up all those original anxieties and fears...How collaborative will my daughter's new IEP team be? Will she outgrow her anxiety behind her middle school peers seeing her in sped? Will her teachers follow her accommodations and respect her need for privacy around her disability? How will my advocacy efforts affect my daughter, as I help her navigate through the coming year?
