Let's face it, an initial diagnosis of dyslexia, or a parent's nagging intuition that their bright child just isn't "cracking the code" of reading, can be frightening and intimidating.
As the parent to a middle schooler with significant dyslexia, for me back-to-school conjures up all those original anxieties and fears...How collaborative will my daughter's new IEP team be? Will she outgrow her anxiety behind her middle school peers seeing her in sped? Will her teachers follow her accommodations and respect her need for privacy around her disability? How will my advocacy efforts affect my daughter, as I help her navigate through the coming year?
What are you fretting over?

Welcome to our new blog
We're really glad you've found us!
We've created this blog as a companion feature to our newly launched website (www.ida-umb.org). We hope it offers yet another great way for families in the Upper Midwest to connect and share our common journey through dyslexia and related language-based learning disabilities.
As board member to The International Dyslexia Association, Upper Midwest Branch (IDA-UMB), mom to a highly successful middle schooler with severe dyslexia, and resident BlogMom to this site, I hope to offer up some familiar insights and, most importantly, hope.
Together, we will navigate the real world of assessment, accommodations, self-esteem, advocacy, IEPs/504 Plans, and effective research-based instructional strategies (to name just a few). And, we'll shake it up from time-to-time; inviting guest experts to blog related topics as well.
Let's get started. So, what's on your mind?
